HUND is a Scandinavian-inspired contemporary childrens stool designed and built as part of my time at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen. Hund aims to encourage curiosity and imagination within children.

As humans, we respond to things that are familiar to us. For Hund, I was motivated by an exhibition at the Helsinki Design Museum on Nokia and learning that the original formation of the phone buttons were intended to be reminiscent of a face. Intrigued by this design choice, I performed further research and came across the psychological phenomenon called pareidolia. Pareidolia causes people to see faces or recognize patterns where there are none.

I wanted to see how I could incorporate this theory into my furniture design. I embraced the natural curiosity that children possess by designing a stool that represents something familiar. Hund has a subtle dog like appearance that produces a positive reaction amongst children and adults alike.

This stool is made of solid maple, making it a sturdy multi-use piece of furniture that can be played with and also sat upon. Hund is finished with a traditional Danish soap finish which is safe and non-toxic. This brightens the maple, giving it a whiter appearance.

The soft curves and sturdy through dowel construction make Hund an delightfully playful stool for children, that can be passed down for generations.
