Give a Scoby, Grow a Scoby is a tea towel (accompanied by a scoby) designed to teach the user how to make kombucha at home. The tea towel is made out of a natural linen that will get stained by each kombucha making process. Therefore leaving a memory of the process on the cloth itself. By having an object that is used with every batch the user is able to hold onto an imprint of every time they have made kombucha; furthering their connection to this living beverage.

What is Kombucha?
It is a lacto-fermented sweet tea.

What is lacto-fermentation?
It is the process in which natural bacteria already present in the fruits or vegetables feeds on starch and sugar to create lactic acid. This is what gives fermented foods their signature “fermented” taste.

What is a SCOBY?
An acronym for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (what turns the sweet tea into kombucha)

I started my kombucha journey by growing my own scoby from unfiltered GT Kombucha. This process combines 1/4 th a cup of sugar to 2 cups of black tea; letting that cool then adding the unfiltered kombucha. Then I covered it with a tea towel secured with a rubber band and let it ferment for a month to create a strong starter liquid.

Eventually I was able to make my own full batch of Kombucha using the scoby I grew.
